What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the moment-by-moment awareness of our present time experience including our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surroundings. We cultivate this awareness with attitudes such as friendliness, non judgment and curiosity.

Mindfulness involves acceptance, in that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without believing, for instance, that there’s a “right” or “wrong” way to think or feel in a given moment.

Mindfulness can be practiced by anyone regardless of their religious beliefs or faith, race, ethnic background, economic status, or level of education.

Jon Kabat-Zinn: “Mindfulness is the awareness that arises by paying attention in a particular way – on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.”
